I scored this $35 (or so) silver tray off Ebay for a client project recently-- and yes, she's giving us LOTS OF GORG as is-- but it's too fancy for our needs. So, it's getting painted-- I KNOW, gasps & clutching at pearls all around! But, trust, y'all are going to LOVE IT and it's a super- #easyPJDIY...here's more gratuitous BEFORE pics:
So pretty...here's the underside...
Now, let's paint. I'm using a small craft foam roller with Benjamin Moore's Regal Interior acrylic paint in a black flat finish. I want to contrast all those sparkly curves with a matte, almost chalky look. And yes, you can use acrylic paint on metal. Some peeps prime the object first with a primer for better/stronger paint adhesion in this instance, but I find that Ben Moore's Regal has amaaaaazing coverage and a primer isn't really necessary, for me. And no, I'm not being paid by Ben Moore for this endorsement...though I'm totally open to it...just sayin, Ben. Call me. But y'all feel free to purchase paint intended for metal, if you're in an absolute tear about it.
I'm kinda sensing a real yearning vibe that y'all want to see more here? Here's a detail shot...
I mean...the precision. Now, just continue to roll on your paint, as we do. I find that if you're not using spray paint for your object, a foam roller is the way to go b/c there's less streaking/uneven strokes & marks, etc in your paint job, overall. Next, I tackled the edges with a smaller artist brush. And I don't have a pic of that step and actually, y'all really don't even need to see that...thanks Dollbaby...but here's something even better: the tray completely painted AND DRY. There's some touch up's I'll do, but LURVING how it looks. Once this is touched up and dried thoroughly, I'll paint the other side...
Whoa, here we go...
Ewwww, ok I went somewhere unknown with the lighting in this next shot, but whateve's...y'all get it...and what y'all are gettin' is HAWT!
Ohhhhh- just remembered! These couple shots were taken at the clients' office. But, there's still hawtness being served here with this tray...WHAT?
Can y'all STAND this? The chalky, flat liciousness is everything...And how divine does it look sitting atop the more rustic wooden yet modern table? It's sooooo modern to me now...even though the curves are still obvi, there's just something so stunning about that finish. Here's how the client ended up using the tray at the trade show...
Clearly, she's buried a little under some fierce winter wear, but y'all get the point...So next time, don't be so quick to get rid of that stuffy silver y'all never use sitting in the attic/basement and if you see a cheap chic piece or two while out shopping (thrift & vintage stores are a GREAT source for these old silver pieces too) grab 'em up ... they can be given a whole new look in a heartbeat!
